Know the proper time to change your vehicle’s oil/lube filter

In a perfect world, a vehicle’s engine would operate in a vacuum, free from assault by dirt, dust, soot, road grime and other contaminants. Since that slice of nirvana doesn’t exist, oil/lube filters were invented as a way to protect the engine from harm. This is much easier said than done, especially if the vehicle is operating in severe-duty conditions, such as those with:

• Frequent idle time, such as stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic
• Extensive highway driving in hot weather
• Heavy towing and weight loads
• Driving on dusty dirt or gravel roads
• Operation in sub-zero climates or excessive cold start-ups
• Driving on steep hills or mountainsides

Creating and strictly following a preventive maintenance will pay dividends in improved engine performance and lower overall maintenance costs. It’s a good rule of thumb to replace the oil/lube filter every time the vehicle’s oil is changed. This will help ensure that the oil and filter are both working at their highest efficiency, which will result in optimized engine and vehicle performance. Generally, it is recommended that a heavy-duty oil filter be changed every 20,000 miles, though new filter designs are allowing that interval to be pushed out to 40,000 miles.
